Arates Monastery
The monastery is medieval Armenian ecclesiastical monastery complex. According to popular legend, this unique monastery’s name came from the combination of “ari” (come) and “tes” (see). The oldest inscription in the monastery dates to 907, the youngest to 1713.
The semi-ruined monuments group consists of several chapels, St. Sion (10th century), St. Astvatsatsin (11th century) churches and two narthexes (13th century). It is supposed that the first construction of the monuments group was founded in the 7th century, though the oldest written reference refers to the IX c.
